I still am amused on a daily basis by the website Hot Chicks with Douchebags, which is described as “pictures of hot chicks with total and complete douchebags. With commentary.” You’ve gotta check it out. Lots of HCwDBs in Calgary bars. I think the one at the link might be a Calgary douchebag.
Adam Green’s song Jessica was what I pulled out of Josh’s Big Box O CDs today. The song is from the album Friends of Mine, and is a paen to “singer” Jessica Simpson.
Today Josh’s Big Box of CDs featured the song Me & Mia from Ted Leo and Pharmacists. You’ll find it on the album Shake the Sheets. He has a new album out this month called Living With The Living.
Josh’s Big Box O CDs today featured a song from The Kooks. I discovered this album last year, and the song You Don’t Love Me is still my favourite song from the album?Inside In/Inside Out. On X92.9 we’ve been regularly playing the song Naive, and I thought I’d give you a taste of something different.
Amanda stopped by the X92.9 RV to chat about her bid to become Maxim magazine’s next Hometown Hottie.? You can rock your vote on the website.
Today on Josh’s Big Box O CDs I featured a track from one of my favourite albums of 2006. The band is Midlake, and the song I played was Roscoe from the album The Trials of Van Occupanther. One of the biggest Midlake cheerleaders is Jason Lee from the TV show My Name is Earl. He mentions the band often. They were recently nominated for three Plug Independant Music Awards: Indie Rock Album of the Year (The Trials of Van Occupanther,) Song of the Year(Roscoe,) and Video of the Year (Young Bride.) I recently mentioned on the Rock Report that The Chemical Brothers are big Midlake fans, and singer Tim Smith will lend his voice to a song on the new Chemical’s album due out this summer.
As you might know, I moved to Calgary from Toronto at the beginning of the year. I have a few relatives here, but they have the kids thing going on. I’ve made friends with people at the radio station, but many of them came from other places too.
I’m not much for meeting people in bars. It’s a tough environment to get to know someone. I’ve always found the best way to meet interesting women is through friends. Here in Calgary I don’t have a ton of local friends, so it’s kinda tough.
Out of curiosity, I started browsing some of the dating sites like Lavalife (paid), Plenty of Fish (free) and OK Cupid (free). Some interesting people there, but again it’s not really casual social, but people aggressively trying to meet people.
We’re still working on some singles events that’ll hopefully be able to bring together X-listeners who like good music for starters.
As for me…still looking, but not desperately.
Today in Josh’s Big Box O CDs I featured Dinosaur Jr. covering The Cure’s classic Just Like Heaven.
The original Dinosaur Jr. line-up are back together for a rare performance in Calgary on May 25th at Mac Hall. Should be an outstanding show.
Today on Josh’s Big Box O CDs we played Sister Havana from Urge Overkill. They might best be described as a two-hit wonder. This song did OK for them, and then they did a Neil Diamond cover - Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon - for the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. and here’s the video for you:
